About us
Trauma & Orthopaedics Research Charity (TORC) are a small but ambitious charity based in Musgrave Park Hospital. We work with a multidisciplinary team of clinicians and research staff to continually improve the provision of holistic care for all those with musculoskeletal injury or disease in Northern Ireland.
We aim to do this through our 3 strategic aims:
Research: to deliver leading edge, high-quality research which will contribute to best practice as well as improved outcomes and enhances the patient experience.
Education: assisting in the educational needs of clinicians, trainees and patients by facilitating staff training, providing patient information and sharing research ideas.
Support: Providing support such as organising patient liasion groups, purchasing equipment and funding training facilities to help patient recovery and assist clinical staff in their work.
Musculoskeletal conditions are the reason for 20% of all consultations in primary care which is a huge burden on the NHS and as we are all living longer this is only going to increase, therefore vital research will be an integral part of improving this service.
TORC have introduced national multi centre studies to musculoskeletal patients here in Northern Ireland but also carried out lots of their own research, which includes reserach into reducing blood loss in patients, helping them recover more quickly, research into low cost solutions to improve orthopaedic operations. TORC have trialled an enhanced recovery after surgery program to improve efficiency in hospital, reduce the burden on waiting lists and help patients to set realistic expectations for their recovery. They have also researched how psychological factors can affect good outcomes in patients. TORC would like to expand their research portfolio and with your support they can carry on their work throughout Northern Ireland.
